Here's a closer look at why that is and some of the most notable meat recalls in recent years.
	
	One of the biggest reasons imported meat is more likely to be contaminated is the length of the supply chain. Meat produced in the United States typically goes through just a few steps from farm to table. First, it's raised on a ranch or farm. Then, it's processed at a USDA-inspected facility. Finally, it's distributed to stores or restaurants.

	Imported meat, on the other hand, often takes a more circuitous route. For example, beef consumed in the United States that comes from cattle raised in Australia and New Zealand must travel a great distance. The cows are raised in a foreign country - often grass-fed all their lives (see why grass-finished cows aren’t the best:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.goodranchers.com/blog/truth-grassfinished-beef-doesnt-exist">Here</a>). Then each cow is processed into beef according to the food standards of the country it is in (not America) before being shipped halfway around the world to American supermarkets and restaurants. The lengthy supply chain creates additional opportunities for contamination at every step along the way.
	
	In addition, imported meat is often sourced from countries with lower food safety standards or less robust agricultural structures than the United States. For example, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/exclusive-us-sees-spike-contaminated-australian-meat-shipments-documents-2021-10-27/">Australia has had higher food recall rates than other countries in recent years</a>. We’ve also seen recalls for food coming from New Zealand, and concern still surrounds Brazilian meat since years ago there were found to be<a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-j-f-brazil-crime-idUKKBN26Z2FZ"> bribes going on in their meat industry</a> - some of these bribes leading to contaminated food being falsified as safe and other malicious tactics to sell dangerous cuts to American supermarkets for profit.
	
	Maybe those feel too far from home to matter, but <a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls-alerts/fsis-issues-public-health-alert-specific-ground-beef-hellofresh-meal-kits-due">HelloFresh</a> - a prominent food subscription service - just had an alert put out about their ground beef due to a dangerous strain of E.coli being found present in the product shipped out from July 2nd- July 21st. The <a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls-alerts/fsis-issues-public-health-alert-specific-ground-beef-hellofresh-meal-kits-due">report</a> states, “the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to concerns that ground beef products in HelloFresh meal kits may be associated with Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 illness.” This shows how quickly contaminated food can make it into America’s homes and how higher standards are needed to provide you with the food you can truly trust.
	
	One of the concerning issues about foreign and imported meat is that U.S. food safety inspectors only physically examine and/or test a small subset of imported meat. According to food industry experts, the rejections we’re seeing with foreign products suggest that other contaminated and dangerous shipments may have made it through the United States border.

	Some people think that eating plant-based "meat" is more humane. They believe that by not eating meat, we will be sparing the lives of animals. However, the production of plant-based meat is anything but humane. The soybeans used to make fake meat are often grown in South America, where rainforest land is being cleared to make room for soy plantations. This is devastating to the environment and the indigenous people who live there. Also, if you upend the meat industry, over 5 million Americans will have their income and jobs put in jeopardy. That is a cost of plant-based meat.
	Other people think that plant-based meat is healthier for us and superior in terms of nutritional benefits, but this simply isn't true. Our bodies are designed to absorb protein from animal sources much more efficiently than from plants. In fact, a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jafc.2c01711"></a>study&nbsp;published by the&nbsp;<a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jafc.2c01711">Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry</a> has shown that we do not absorb as many essential or non-essential amino acids from meat substitutes as we do from meat itself. This is likely due to the fact that proteins in substitutes do not break down into peptides as well as those from meats.
	And then there are the people who are pushing plant-based meat because they stand to make a lot of money from it. 	The Meat Recession is coming. Why? We've all seen and felt the steep price increases on our favorite meats over the past year. Inflation kept outdoing itself month after month after month. This was in large part due to the fact that feed for farmers was at an all time high; the production costs of meat had soared and this increase was passed onto us, the consumer. Recently, the cost of feed has dropped for the first time in months, but lower prices are not on the horizon according to experts. Here are the 3-reasons why the meat recession is coming<h2>Reason 1: The Cattle Herd Is Shrinking</h2>
	According to <a href="https://downloads.usda.library.cornell.edu/usda-esmis/files/h702q636h/tq57pz24k/cz30r103f/catl0722.pdf">USDA data</a>, the US cattle herd is down 2% from where it was in July of 2021. A contributing factor to the decline has been the droughts impacting Texas ranchers. Many of these herds are being sold to markets when they normally wouldn’t be brought for years. This is due to lack of water, high feed prices, or financial pressure on the farmers and ranchers themselves. Not just Texas herds have shrunk though. The money to be made during pandemic meat prices pushed many farms and ranches to cash in on cattle that would not have normally been sold.

	Selling cattle is fine if we can replace the herd quickly, but “<a href="https://agrilifetoday.tamu.edu/2022/07/26/shrinking-cattle-herd-could-equal-high-calf-beef-prices/">replacement heifers</a> – the young, future calf-producing cows – are at their lowest point nationally since USDA began keeping numbers in 1973.” We could be looking at a lengthier recovery than the 2011 droughts imposed on the market. Scarcity and steep prices are still on the horizon, but we’re going to show you how to lock in the price you pay for beef at the end of this article.<h2>
Reason 2: Beef Shortage = Chicken Shortage</h2>
	
	When one protein becomes harder to afford or find, people gravitate towards a new one that has a better price or easier access. As affordable beef has become harder to find - not at Good Ranchers though - people have turned to chicken. Unfortunately the price increases have even hit poultry. The <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.t02.htm">Consumer Price Index</a> shows a 16.4% increase in the price of chicken from Jan-Apr of this year. With the Bird-Flu outbreak that happened earlier this year, the USDA is forecasting <a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-price-outlook/summary-findings/">continued price increases</a> for chicken in 2022.

These are not top owners of farmland or pastureland - just land in general. For example the top land owner is the Emmerson Family out of California. They are a giant in the timber business - so their land is for trees - not crops or animals.

	Within the land report, we do find that Bill Gates is the largest private owner of America’s farmland with 269,000 acres owned at the time of publishing. These holdings are throughout the country in over a dozen states. While this is a significant amount of land - there are about 900 million acres of farmland in America, so Gates’ portfolio comes in at less than half a percent of total farmland in the country.&nbsp;
	Recent censuses of farmland and pastureland in the U.S still shows that they both are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/farm-economy/land-use-land-value-tenure/farmland-ownership-and-tenure/">majorly owner-operated</a> and still primarily in the hands of small to mid-sized farms. This is no reason to hold back from asking questions about individuals amassing farm and pasture lands though. One concern we can see in the future is that farmland in particular is being rented at higher and higher rates. 2014 data from the USDA shows that a majority of cropland is rented.

	Why is this a concerning trend? According to the same USDA article that supplied this graph’s data, “smaller family farm operators are more likely to be full owners of land they operate.” As we move further and further away from ownership - we are losing more and more of the independent small farms and ranches that helped build American agriculture. We only partner with independent farms and ranches here in the U.S., and we would hate to see them become renters instead of owners. There is power in ownership of land - and the more renting we see - the more there may be a consolidation of that power.

Is The Chicken Supply Running Low? You Won't Expect Why!

Well your ground chicken, ground turkey, ground beef, and ground pork could be unsafe more often than you think according to a recent <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/ground-meats/is-our-ground-meat-safe-to-eat-a2700598982/" style="background-color: initial; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif;">Consumer Report</a>. The group doing research purchased <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/ground-meats/is-our-ground-meat-safe-to-eat-a2700598982/" style="background-color: initial; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif;">351</a> packages of assorted ground meats. After testing, they found that nearly a third of the ground chicken packages contained salmonella, and many of the other meats were found with this bacteria as well. This obviously is a much higher presence of dangerous bacteria in ground meats than aimed for by the industry. With even big name brands present in the study, it can leave many consumers uneasy about the products they know and bring into their homes.

	Even more alarming than the salmonella cases was one case of 
	<a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/escherichia-coli-o157-h7">O157:H7</a> in a package of ground beef, which is a potentially deadly strain of E. coli. When Consumer Reports found this they reported it to the USDA, and this resulted in a <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/food-recalls/ground-beef-recalled-due-to-deadly-e-coli-risk-a2991753727/">recall</a> of over 28,000 pounds of ground beef. James E. Rogers, PhD, who’s currently the director of food safety and research at <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/ground-meats/is-our-ground-meat-safe-to-eat-a2700598982/">Consumer Reports</a> and is a former official of the USDA said, “that bacteria should not have been in the meat, period…There is a zero-tolerance policy for that bacteria, and for good reason: It’s hard to treat, and can kill.”
	This recall pulled meat from the shelves of major supermarkets like Albertsons, Walmart, and more. Nearly a dozen brand names of products were compromised since they're all packaged under the same meat processing company: Interstate Meat Distributors. This recall is only a couple month after other recalls that amounted to over 
	<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls-alerts/lakeside-refrigerated-services-recalls-ground-beef-products-due-possible-e--coli">120,000</a> pounds of potentially contaminated beef with E. coli. To top it off, earlier this year the Food Safety and Inspection Service put out a <a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls-alerts/fsis-issues-public-health-alert-ground-beef-products-due-possible-e-coli-o26#:~:text=WASHINGTON%20April%2027%2C%202022%2C%20%E2%80%93,no%20longer%20available%20for%20purchase.">Public Alert</a> about possible contamination in six different ground beef products - many carried at Kroger. In the wake of all these food uncertainties, what can we do?

Ground Meats Riddled With E-Coli and Salmonella, Report Finds

Thanks to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), you can now find GMO products in your meat aisle too. The FDA brought <a href="https://www.drugs.com/news/fda-says-gene-edited-cattle-safe-eat-103975.html">GMO Beef</a> one step closer to your table by greenlighting gene-edited cattle to enter the U.S. food market. Yes, you read that right. Not only was this quietly done, but it also was reportedly fast tracked into this stage of approval.

	If you didn’t know, some IGA salmon and pig species already exist. IGAs are <a href="https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/biotechnology-products-cvm-animals-and-animal-food/intentional-genomic-alterations-igas-animals" style="background-color: initial; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif;">Intentional Genomic Alterations</a> made to an animal. Cattle are simply the latest animal to be modified in this way. It’s being welcomed into the market with less testing and approval processes than the first two IGAs of salmon and pig, which could be cause for concern since there are still many unknowns surrounding how these alterations will impact the cattle, their meat, and the people who consume it.
	This gene-edited species of cattle was created by Recombinetics. According to reports about their alterations, these cattle had their “genes altered with a technology called <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/understanding/genomicresearch/genomeediting/">CRISPR</a> to have short, slick coats that help withstand hot weather. Cattle that aren’t stressed by heat might gain more weight, making for more efficient meat production.” With this project already having the runway approved by the FDA, we could see GMO beef from this program hit the market in less than two years. We’re still unsure how the product will be labeled to differentiate it to consumers - if it will be at all.

	Why is this a big deal? Bigger, better, faster beef is always great, right? Wrong. Great beef and great meat starts with a great process; a transparent one that you can trust in and rely on. One study in the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3791249/#:~:text=The%20biggest%20threat%20caused%20by,which%20are%20immune%20to%20antibiotics." style="background-color: initial; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif;">National Library of Medicine</a> outlined the dangers of Genetically Modified food products well when it said, “the biggest threat caused by GM foods is that they can have harmful effects on the human body. It is believed that consumption of these genetically engineered foods can cause the development of diseases which are immune to antibiotics… these foods are new inventions, not much is known about their long term effects on human beings.” 
	
	In our opinion, this adds a whole new meaning to the phrase “mystery meat”. Not only is the meat itself a mystery, but the process still remains mainly in the shadows for most Americans. Explaining how it is done is one thing, but explaining why it should be done is even more important. It is in that realm that we feel they have not made a compelling argument. The unknowns of GMOs and IGAs outnumber the knowns 10 to 1. It's hard to believe that the safety and consistency of this process can match what great farms &amp; ranches already do. Until then, there is no reason to reinvent meat. In our opinion - meat is great the way it is - especially ours.

GMO CATTLE - FDA APPROVES GENETICALLY MODIFIED BEEF

<h2>What Happened To The Cattle in Kansas?</h2>In the last week, shocking videos started circulating, claiming a heatwave killed cattle in southwest Kansas. Many people were curious and skeptical about the cause of these deaths. The footage came out showing fields lined with hundreds cattle that passed away in Kansas. News began to report that up to 10,000 cattle were dead in the state due to extreme temperatures over the past few days. You can see footage of the events below.

This toll only represents facilities that reached out to the agency for help with carcass disposal, he said.According to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/heat-humidity-kill-least-2000-kansas-cattle-state-says-2022-06-15/" style="background-color: initial; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif;">Drew Lerner, president of World Weather Inc</a>, "Temperatures reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius) in northwest Kansas by Monday". This huge spike in temperature, paired with an increase of humidity and decrease in cooling winds lead to the large amounts of cattle passing due to heat stress. Normally, cattle can dissipate the excess heat at night, but these increased temperatures did not let up in the evening, which added to the perfect storm of stress on the cattle. Without ample water or a cooling system, the stress the animals endure at that temperature is unfortunately deadly when prolonged.The amount of cattle that passed in Kansas could be higher than 2000, since that number only accounts for cattle that the department was reached out to about for disposal assistance. Even if more than 2000 cattle passed away, that is not enough to cause a severe disruption in the meat industry. There are currently over&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nass.usda.gov/Newsroom/2022/01-31-2022.php">90 million</a> head of cattle in the United States, and while thousands being lost is tragic, it is not an event that should draw so much conspiracy.&nbsp; Any amount of lost cattle for those ranches is unfortunate. With increased feed prices due to the lack of corn exports from Ukraine or Russia, cattle producers are already working on thinner margins, so our hearts go out to anybody impacted by this heat wave.
