Beyond Meat Ruins Dippin Dots and Meat Simultaneously

Beyond Meat Ruins Dippin Dots and Meat Simultaneously

For a company that has raised 122 million dollars, Beyond’s share of the U.S. Meat Industry is barely the size of a thawing Dippin Dot in a paper cup at your local fair in the summer. Why has an industry that’s seen billions invested also experienced consistent and rapid declines? This could be in part because Beyond Meat uses “little pellets or cryogenically frozen balls of fats” to try to give their fake meat the flavor and juiciness of real meat. Specifically, they use Dippin Dots' fat globules to add expeller-pressed canola oil and refined coconut oil into their meat monstrosities, ruining two of life’s greatest pleasures at the same time: beef and ice cream.

Despite initially being sold as a healthy solution to its consumers, experts are now warning that Beyond Meat's products are not much better for consumers than fast food. Although anyone with a nose could tell that simply from the off putting smell plant-based proteins give off. It has the scent of a chemical vat that if you fell into might give you superpowers, but unfortunately the only superpower Beyond gives its consumers is higher cholesterol levels.

This criticism of Beyond Meat has resulted in some consumers, like Michelle Darby from Marlton, New Jersey, choosing to go back to meat. Darby, who had been trying to eat more healthily due to her borderline high cholesterol, found that the fake meat products she was eating, such as the chicken-less nuggets and Impossible sausage sandwich, were not delivering the results she was looking for. After speaking to her doctor and learning that the processed foods she was consuming were not helping her health, Darby stopped buying plant-based meats.

Dr. David Katz, the founding director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center, has described Beyond's products as “ultraprocessed”. Another issue with Beyond Meat is its use of highly processed oils, such as expeller-pressed canola oil and refined coconut oil. These oil globules are the same base Dippin’ Dots uses in their ice cream. Beyond has partnered with Scott Fischer, the former CEO of Dippin' Dots and current CEO of Cryogenic Processors LLC to acquire the Dippin Dots tech to put in their beyond burgers.

While Beyond Meat may have initially been sold as a replacement to meat for vegetarians, vegans, and carnivores alike, it is now clear that its products are highly processed and not much better for consumers than traditional fast food burgers. With the growing criticism of Beyond Meat's products, it remains to be seen whether the company will be able to pull out of their downward spiral in the coming years. In our opinion, their revenue is rightfully Dippin. Why? Because people seem to like a savory piece of real beef, juicy cut of chicken, or a fresh filet of salmon more than fat frozen with liquid nitrogen. Who would have guessed? Hint: literally all of us.
